TheRichmond, Virginia movers work honestlyand openly with our customers, which is why we were dismayed when two Metroworkers went against this policy. Theworkers stole thousands of dollars in coins from fare machines in 2011. From this money they used it to buy hugeamounts of lottery tickets.

HoraceMcDade, of Bowie, Md., and John V. Haile of Woodbridge, Va. worked together intheir heist of money from malfunctioning fare machines, federal prosecutorsalleged on Jan. 19. This money was oncein their customers' hands, and because of this, not only were they stealingfrom their company but their customers as well. When the Richmond movers learned ofthis, all they could do was shake their heads at the dishonesty.

Thereason why the investigation began was a source reported Haile pulled up in aJaguar multiple times to a store in Woodbridge with $500 worth of bagged coinsand bought lottery tickets. Soon afterthe Richmond, Virginia moving companies were shocked to learn the 2011 lotteryrecords showed Haile won $32,000.

The Tanner family Moving and Storage legacy started in Richmond, VA in 1917 with Elam Lee Tanner Jr. At age 17, Elam Lee Tanner Jr. used a horse drawn wagon to haul luggage for travelers at Richmond's area train stations. Thus Tanner's Transfer & Storage was born. The company will move its headquarters to Fairfax County, investing more than $10 million dollars in the move and creating more than 100 new jobs over the upcoming three years. This economic boost for Virginia is one the state competed for against Maryland and Colorado, and with Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell’s announcement on October 12th, the GeoEye relocation was confirmed.

The company is moving to the Dulles Corner Office Center in Herndon, located near Washington Dulles International Airport. Discrimination on Rasta-Nation?

So, it’s common knowledge you have to look presentable for work. However, the degree to which you have to dress and look professional varies exponentially based on the industry you work in. For example, someone working for a Fortune 1000 company would be expected to appear much more professional than a person working in an auto garage. Ignoring the sliding scale of work-appropriateness in terms of clothing and appearance, how specific can companies get as to what is or is not acceptable in terms of someone’s overall look?
This question is spurred from the recent lawsuit raised against a moving company located in Virginia who discriminated against a potential employee due to his Rastafarian appearance. Namely, his dreadlocks. The lawsuit brought on by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission states that Christopher Woodson was denied employment because of his hairstyle.
Now, it seems fair enough. Some companies want to promote a professional corporate image, and a cheetah patterned dye job and 6-inch Mohawk just won’t quite communicate this image. Though, the roots of Woodson’s dreadlocks go much deeper than trying to make a statement; they’re part of his religious beliefs.
Since the moving company denied him employment based on his dreadlocks, and he has grown his dreadlocks as part of his religious beliefs, this lends to the argument that the company denied him a job because of religious discrimination. However, Lawrence Transportation Systems asserts that Woodson’s dreadlocks violated the company’s policy regarding appearance, and has nothing to do with discriminating against any of his religious beliefs.
This poses the question: Should a person’s appearance always weigh in on whether they are right for a job? And if so, where do we draw the line, or rather, when do we pick up the scissors?

Moving Terminology

There are probably many times when you are planning a move and you are working with a moving company, such as Tanner Van Lines, and there might be some terminology you might not understand. We would like to familarize you with some of these words so that the next time you move, you will be all set on the lingo.

Accessorial (Additional) Services - services such as packing, unpacking, or shuttle service that you request to be performed (or are necessary because of landlord requirements or other special circumstances). Charges for these services are in addition to the transportation charges.

Advanced Charges - charges for services not performed by the mover but instead by a professional, craftsman or other third party at your request. The charges for these services are paid for by the mover and added to your bill of lading charges.

Bill of Lading - the receipt for your goods and the contract for their transportation. It is your responsibility to understand the bill of lading before you sign it. If you do not agree with something on the bill of lading, do not sign it until you are satisfied that it is correct. The bill of lading is an important document. Don't lose or misplace your copy.

Binding/Non-Binding Estimate - a binding estimate is an agreement made in advance with the mover that guarantees the total cost of the move based on the quantities and services shown on the estimate. A non-binding estimate is the carrier's approximation of the cost based on the estimated weight of the shipment and the accessorial services requested. A non-binding estimate is not binding on the carrier and the final charges will be based on the actual weight and tariff provisions in effect.

Guaranteed Pickup and Delivery Service - an additional level of service whereby dates of service are guaranteed, with the mover providing reimbursement for delays. This premium service is often subject to minimum weight requirements.

High Value Article - items included in a shipment that are valued at more than $100 per pound. These items should be disclosed to the mover to ensure that they are protected accordingly.

Inventory - the detailed descriptive list of your household goods showing the number and condition of each item.

Transportation Charges - charges for the vehicle transportation portion of your move. These charges apply in addition to the additional service charges.

Order for Service - the document authorizing the mover to transport your household goods.

Pickup and Delivery Charges - separate transportation charges applicable for transporting your shipment between the warehouse and your residence.

Shuttle Service - use of a smaller vehicle to provide service to residences that are not accessible to the mover's normal linehaul equipment (large moving vans).

Storage-In-Transit (SIT) - temporary warehouse storage of your shipment pending further transportation; for example, if your new home isn't quite ready to occupy. Added charges for SIT service and final delivery charges from the warehouse will apply.

Valuation - the degree of "worth" of the shipment. The valuation charge that you are assessed compensates the mover for assuming a greater degree of liability than that provided for in the base transportation charges.

Moving can be a stressful time for many people. Whether it be the planning or the actually move itself, taking time to get organized can make your move go smoothly and stress-free.

Here are some tips on how to make your move more managable:

1. Start early- Almost everyone has more stuff than they think they do, and almost no one leaves enough time to pack it.

2. Room Lists- Start by forming two room lists, one for your current place and one for your future place. This will help you manage what has to go where.

3. Room Inventory- Go to each room and write down the types of things that need to be packed: furniture items, length of shelving, closets, etc.

4. Time Allotment- Make sure to leave enough time. The most common timeframe reported by people moving is that it takes a month to pack. One study reported that it takes 4-5 hours to pack an average dorm room, so that should give you an idea of what’s involved.

5. Calendar- Pull out a calendar and plan by day when each room will be completed.

6. Delegation- If you’re moving with family members, agree with them exactly while tasks they will be doing and the date they will be finished.

7. Track your progress- at least once per week track where you are against the date on the calendar. Revise your plan if you’re falling behind.
